How mediation works
Here’s what to expect, so nothing comes as a surprise to either of you.

Step 1
A first call
What happens
One of us listens to what has brought you here and explains how we work.
How long
20 minutes, free.
What to bring
Just the outline of the situation and any questions.
What’s private
What you say stays with us. Nothing is passed on without your say-so.
Step 2
Separate first meetings
What happens
Each of you meets a mediator alone, to say what matters most and ask anything you like.
How long
60 minutes each.
What to bring
A few notes on what you’d like to be different.
What’s private
We won’t share what you say here with the other person unless you agree.
Step 3
Joint sessions
What happens
You sit down together. The mediator keeps the talk fair, keeps to one topic at a time and helps you both find options.
How long
90 minutes a session, and most people need a few.
What to bring
Relevant papers, and an open mind about options.
What’s private
The sessions are for you both. Anything shared in the room is used only for the talks.
Step 4
The written summary
What happens
We write down what you both decided, in plain words, and check it with each of you.
How long
Sent within 5 working days of your last session.
What to bring
Nothing. Just read it carefully.
What’s private
The summary goes only to the two of you, unless you both ask us to send it elsewhere.
After the summary
The summary is a written record of what you both decided. It’s not a legal document, and we don’t give legal advice.
You may want independent advice before you make any of it formal, and we can suggest when that’s worth doing.
Online or in person
You can meet at our rooms, or by video from wherever suits you. Either way, the steps are the same.
Ready to begin, or just to ask a question?
One short enquiry is enough to begin.
